A series of watercolours painted on canvas textured with gesso. The initial washes take ages to dry as the canvas does not absorb the water but it means the colours can mix and mingle in the crevices as it dries creating wonderful patterns and textures.
Woodland and Forest scenes painted in watercolours. These are imaginative compositions based on a loose wash which creates the atmosphere in the image.
This idea for format started after a doodle along the bottom of a finished painting. Painted in an atmospheric style and developed from a wash covering all the paper. In a number of the images Ian has used a broken wash which hints at tree shapes in the background in a semi abstract style.
Using the paint straight from the tube for the most part allows an impasto approach with water only used for the branch details, helping to create texture and depth.
Traditional watercolours showing the English countryside. These were Ian’s starting point, painting in this style for a number of years clearly influenced by some of the watercolour greats.
